Dr. Javier Barallobre-Barreiro

 

Javier Barallobre-Barreiro is a Molecular Biologist by training and the main focus of his research is the biology of cardiac extracellular matrix.

During his PhD, awarded 2011, he developed in collaboration with Prof Mayr’s group an approach to establish the first comprehensive description of cardiac extracellular matrix remodeling using mass spectrometry in a large animal model.

Javier joined Prof Mayr’s Lab (King’s College London) as a Posdoctoral Researcher in 2011 to continue with the same line of investigation, but extending his research to human patients in addition to animal models. During this postdoc, he improved the available strategies to study the cardiovascular extracellular matrix and investigated the role of extracellular matrix protein fragmentation in cardiac disease, providing as well the first direct analysis of glycosylation of human cardiac tissue using mass spectrometry.

Since 2016, Javier is a Career Establishment Fellow in the Cardiovascular Division, King’s College London, where he continues to investigate the roles of extracellular matrix protein modifications such as glycosylation and proteolytic fragmentation in cardiac disease, using combinations of molecular biology and mass spectrometry techniques.
